Isolation Together #4 — Helicopter Copter

Welcome to Isolation Together! These are strange and uncertain times, and Lady Cactus wants to do our part to help musicians who have been massively affected by COVID-19. So send us your music, videos, live stream announcements, and more! We will be featuring folks on our blog and social media in the coming weeks, and we would love to include you too. Email us at hello@ladycactus.me for a chance to be featured!

Denver percussionist Michael John McKee - known for drumming with groups Strange Americans, Paul DeHaven, Kid Reverie, and David Burchfield – is reaching for new ground with Perc Ens. Under the moniker Helicopter Copter – recognized for works like the experimental music video collaboration Whisper Down the Lane and wind chime sound installation Voices – Perc Ens is a new percussion ensemble, aiming for high intensity, low volume acoustic compositions. The new release, Hear Yourself, displays moments of flourished epiphany sandwiched between droning repetition, like a tacitly humble solo shaker. Inspired by minimalist composers Steve Reich and Terry Riley, Hear Yourself is only 3 tracks, but 23 minutes of marimba, drum set, and hand percussion, all composed to showcase the melody, rhythm, and timbre of each instrument. Released at a time when physical distancing is the norm, Hear Yourself is an invitation to deep listening.

Listen to Hear Yourself below, and keep up with Helicopter Copter through their website, Facebook, and Instagram.
